HHS Returns To The Hardwood
Thirty candidates for positions on the Hillsboro High School basketball team were at practice in the Coffeen School gym Friday afternoon, Nov. 14. They were there because a portion of the floor in their high school gym is undergoing refinishing.
Only four seniors are on the squad; they are Blake DeLong, Michael Ginos, Nick Holtschulte, and Chase Fletcher.
Six juniors (Nolan Rappe, Derek Davidson, John Joyce, Colby Cooper, Eric Simmons, and Brandon Merano) are on the roster, while Kiefer Thacker, Logan Voyles, Jacob Fenton, Jacob Cobetto, Evan Malloy, Bert Holloway, Bill Brumberlow, and Cody Petty round out those most apt to see varsity play as sophomores. Twelve freshmen complete the squad.
Coach Brent Stewart, at the helm for his second year, says his team will have to scrap for any victories. "We're not big, but we'll have to play physically. We're also looking at a year when everyone in our conference will be good; Greenville is probably the team to beat, but Staunton, Pana, and Vandalia return a lot of players and will be strong."
"I probably won't know who my starters will be until just before we open (against Rushville at 5 p.m. in the New Berlin Tournament on Monday, Nov. 24). DeLong and Rappe have the most varsity experience, but several of the others bring the same skill sets to the floor."
In addition to Rushville, the Toppers will face Jacksonville Routt (6:30 p.m., Nov. 25), Williamsville (6:30 p.m., Nov. 28), the host Pretzels (8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 29), and Girard (5 p.m., Monday, Dec. 1) before hosting the Nokomis Redskins Tuesday, Dec. 2.
The annual Gator-Ade Scrimmage will be in the newer junior high gym this Friday, Nov. 21, at 6 p.m.
