Impeachment Vote Possible By Weekend
by John M. Galer

"We're heading for an impeachment vote, probably later this week," State Rep. Gary Hannig of Litchfield stated. Hannig a member of the impeachment committee, said that hearings will continue with testimony from Roland Burris.

Burris, the former Illinois attorney general tapped by Blagojevich to replace President-elect Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate, was invited to the hearing to testify by Gov. Blagojevich.

The committee may also get tapes from recordings released by U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, of conversations federal investigators recorded as part of their criminal investigation of the governor.

Also to be brought up will be civil service hiring practices under the governor. The governor has been accused of turning civil service hiring into a patronage operation. Testimony will be from former Inspector General Scott. "Courts have been pretty clear on what is an appointment and what is a civil service job," Hannig stated.

It would take a simple majority vote for the House to impeach the governor. Then the state Senate would hold a trial to determine if the governor is guilty. A conviction there requires a two-thirds majority.
