Two young men were killed and one was critically injured in an accident in the early morning hours on Christmas Eve east of Litchfield.

Clayton Owens, 21, and Cody Dewitt, 18, both of Litchfield, were pronounced dead at the scene by the Montgomery County Coroner's Office. The driver of the vehicle, Matthew Gray, 19, also of Litchfield, remains in critical condition at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the one-vehicle accident on Old Quarry Trail, east of Old Litchfield Trail, was phoned into 911 at 1:35 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 24.

Gray was transferred to St. John's by helicopter.

Ten Litchfield Fire and Rescue members were on the scene for over four hours. Investigation into the accident continues by the sheriff's office and Illinois State Police accident reconstruction.
