Edward Carl Swain, 84, of Hillsboro, died at 6:55 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, 2015, at Hillsboro Rehab & Healthcare Center in Hillsboro.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, in Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro with the Rev. Harry Meyer officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsboro with graveside military rites by V.F.W. Post #1306 and American Legion Post #425.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Mr. Swain was born on July 28, 1931, in West Frankfort, a son of the late Clem and Lockey (Pharis) Swain. He was a 1948 graduate of Christopher High School.

He and Lila Bullock were married on April 8, 1951 in Piggott, AR, and she survives.

Mr. Swain was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Germany from 1951 to 1953.  

He worked for Greenburg Coop. in West Frankfort, Christopher, DuQuoin, and Paducah, KY, until 1960 when he moved to Hillsboro as the manager of the company's new John Green Dry Goods Store.  In 1966, he started selling life insurance for Woodman Accident and Life Insurance Company. In 1972, he became an agent for Montgomery Mutual Fire where he was a member of the board of directors. He then began his own insurance and real estate business before retiring in 1990.

Mr. Swain was a member of First Christian Church in Hillsboro which he joined in 1960, a life member of the V.F.W., Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge #51 in Hillsboro, Scottish Rite Freemasonry, ANSAR Shrine of Springfield, Hillsboro Lions Club where he was a past president, and Eastern Star where he was a Past Worthy Patron

Along with his wife, Mr. Swain is survived by a daughter, Sally (David) Adams of Hillsboro, and five grandchildren, Sarah Adams, Mackenzie Adams, Joshua Adams, Alissa Adams and Daisy Adams.

He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Craig Adams and Curt Adams; and three brothers, Francis Swain, Cecil Swain and Floyd Flatt.

The family suggests memorials be given to Shriner's Hospital for Children.
