Helen D. Cox, 93, of Hillsboro died at 3:23 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016, at Montgomery Nursing and Rehab in Taylor Springs.

Cremation rites were accorded and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cox was born in Springfield on Dec. 10, 1922, the daughter of the late William and Alma (Vogelsang) Reynolds. She married Leonard Eugene "Gene" Cox on April 18, 1944, in Springfield, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 29, 1976.

She lived in Springfield and Danville before moving to Hillsboro in 1965. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Springfield and was branch manager at American Savings when it first moved to Hillsboro. In addition, Mrs. Cox worked as a writer for The Hillsboro Journal, and later as a proofreader for The Journal-News, up in to her 80s.

Mrs. Cox was a past member of the Chamber of Commerce and loved spending time with her grandchildren and family. A fun-loving person, she loved to laugh, especially at sleepovers with her sisters, and will be remembered for her kind and generous spirit.

She is survived by four daughters, Barbara (husband Richard) Arhart of Wilmington, DE, Dr. Nancy Cox (husband Dr. Paul Epstein) of Nashville, TN, Terry Cox (husband Dale Ware) of Wasilla, AK, and Betsy (husband Mike) Homa of Hillsboro; five grandchildren, Nicholas (Meghan Hagerty) Homa, Katie Homa, Bonnie Epstein, Carrie Epstein and Kristin Ware; and one great-grandchild, Deklen Homa.

Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Memorials will benefit the INAD (infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy) study at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, in honor of Grace Herschelman.
