Retired Sgt. First Class Herman Odell Ross, 68, died Monday, April 13, 2015, at his Hinesville, GA, home while under the care of hospice, with family by his side.

A celebration of life service was held Friday, April 17, at the Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Flemington, GA, with Pastor John Hopkins officiating.

Full military honors were rendered and inurnment was in the columbarium at the Dallas-Ft. Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, TX

Mr. Ross was born on June 1, 1946, in Decatur, the son of Charles and Doris Lewis.

He was raised and educated in Litchfield and graduated from Litchfield High School with the class of 1963.

Mr. Ross was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam Era. He retired from the military after serving more than 20 years. After retirement from the Army, he went to work as a truck driver for De Boer Trucking and retired from there after 15 years of service.

He enjoyed spending time with Annie, the family's boxer. He was of the Catholic faith and was a member of the VFW, Hinesville Chapter.

Mr. Ross is survived by his wife of 47 years, Charlotte Ross of Hinesville, GA; son, Kevin L. Ross of Hinesville, GA; daughters and sons-in-law, Kelly L. (Greg) Klein of Gilmer, TX, Becky (Skip) Bachert of Dawson Springs, KY, and Kara (Aaron) Toma of Monmouth, OR; mother, Doris Lewis of Litchfield; brothers and sister-in-law, Dennis (Debbie) Dwyer and Orville Lewis, both of Litchfield; sisters and brother-in-law, Sonja (Bob) Terrell of Litchfield, Molly Lewis of Waggoner and JoAnn Lewis of Breaux Bridge, LA; grandchildren, Stephen, Amber, Kayla, Amanda, Charles, Garrett, Coleson and Kristopher; great-grandchildren, Bella, Kayden and Piper; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Lewis; and two brothers, Bobby Lewis and Stephen Lewis.
