John Lawrence Wempe, 51, of Pocahontas died Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 31, at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton with the Rev. George Radosevich officiating.

Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Staunton.

Mr. Wempe was born on May 23, 1963, in Breese, the son of Bernard Wempe and the late Joanna Wempe.

He previously worked for First Student Bus Lines as a bus driver in Edwardsville and was a former member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Breese. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and enjoyed WWE wrestling, working on jigsaw puzzles, cooking, bon fires and spending time with his family.

Mr. Wempe is survived by his fiancee, Nena Harper of Pocahontas; his father, Bernard Wempe of Breese; daughter, Katie (husband Levi) Nowell of Litchfield; son, Christopher Wempe of Pocahontas; four grandchildren, Levi Jr., Abigail, Ryan and Kelsey; six siblings, Bernadette (husband Christopher) Bean of Collinsville, Kathy Wempe of Breese, Duane (wife Theresa) Wempe of Breese, Brian Wempe of Salem, Deb (husband Scott) Athmer of Albers and Holly (husband Damon) Arter of Aviston; numerous nieces and nephews; and one great-nephew.

Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by a son, Allen Wempe.

Memorials are suggested to the family.
