Joseph Wayne Bandy, 80, of Mt. Vernon died at 4:42 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 16, at Woodlawn Christian Church in Woodlawn with Tracy Thomas officiating.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, in Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Honey Bend. Plummer Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Hughey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements in Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Bandy was born on June 12, 1936, in Litchfield, the son of Benjamin Wayne and Thelma Bernita (Gates) Bandy. He married his college sweetheart, Joan Elizabeth Pless, on July 18, 1958, in Detroit, MI, and she survives in Mt. Vernon.

He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1954, where he played basketball and went to state championships twice. He also played on the high school football team. In 1958, he graduated from William Jewel College in Liberty, MO, with a BS in business administration. He was also president of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.

Mr. Bandy worked in finance for 50 years before retiring and was also a past board member of the Illinois Manufactured Housing Association. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time in his woodworking shop, making gifts for his family. He also enjoyed working in the yard and mowing grass with his John Deere riding mower. He was a dedicated and faithful member of Woodlawn Christian Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Stephen M. (wife Susan) Bandy of Hernando, MS, and Daniel L. (wife Cyndi) Bandy of Edwardsville; one daughter, Ruth E. (husband Todd) Rhoades of Mt. Vernon; seven grandchildren, Gregory Bandy of Cincinnati, OH, April (husband Nathan) Thompson of Bartlett, TN, Leah Bandy and Christian Bandy, both of Edwardsville, and Caleb Rhoades, Joshua Rhoades and Jordan Rhoades, all of Mt. Vernon; and two great-grandchildren, Maddy and Mason Thompson of Bartlett, TN.

Mr. Bandy was preceded in death by an older sister, Alice Schneider.
