Joseph William Richardson, Sr., 95, of Sorento died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016, at his home in Sorento.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Kurrus Funeral Home Chapel in Belleville with the Rev. Wes Hart officiating. Interment followed at Lake View Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights.

Mr. Richardson was born on July 9, 1921, in Marked Tree, AR, the son of the late Phillip Earl Richardson and Syble Gertrude (Williams) Houser. He married Henrietta I. Gravot, and she survives.

He was a World War II veteran combat engineer servicing in the Luzon New Guinea Campaigns and awarded two Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and Meritorious Service Unit Plaque. He worked at Armor Packing then General Motors, where he retired from in 1979.

Mr. Richardson enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Joseph (Janet) Richardson, Jr. of Sorento and John (Brenda) Richardson of Belleville; brother, Carl Eugene (Betty) Richardson of New Memphis; six grandchildren, Joseph III, Jason, Tammy, John Jr., Don and Darla; 13 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marie Dehler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Mr. Richardson was preceded in death by his daughter, Joetta; brothers, Earl Richardson and James Richardson; sister, Pauline Patton; and grandson, Bill Richardson.
