Olin Vernon Weiss, 90, of Galesburg, but formerly of Litchfield died Friday, May 3, 2013, at 2:52 a.m. in the emergency room of Galesburg Cottage Hospital in Galesburg.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, May 7, at 2 p.m. at the Becker & Son Funeral Home in Mt. Olive. The Rev. Ben Fiore will officiate and burial will be in Mt.Olive City Cemetery. Visitation will begin at the funeral home at 1 p.m. the same day, May 7.

Mr. Weiss was born July 29, 1922, in Staunton, the son of Martin and Mabel (McGaughey) Weiss. He and Betty Jane Schultz were married on July 10, 1943, in St. Louis, MO and she survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Marsha (husband Jim) McGhee of Galesburg, Renee Tolliver of Deland, FL, Becky (husband Paul) Stroud of Blue Springs, MO and Leisa Brooks of Bethalto; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Leland Weiss.

Mr. Weiss graduated from Staunton High School in 1940. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 until November of 1945. He was on the destroyer escort U.S.S. Joyce as the ship's cook.

He worked for John Hancock Insurance, becoming manager of the Galesburg office before running his own agency in Florida until his retirement.

In his retirement he and his wife enjoyed traveling to visit Civil War battlegrounds. He loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed caring for his yard.
