Raymond Arthur Viehweg, 80, of Mt. Olive died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at 4:40 a.m. in Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, May, 19, at 11 a.m. in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mt. Olive. The Rev. Daniel Barbey will officiate, and burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is tonight, Monday, May 18, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Becker and Son Funeral Home in Mt. Olive.

Mr. Viehweg was born Jan. 19, 1929, in Litchfield to Carl Gustav and Clara Frieda (Doehler) Viegweg. He graduated from Mt. Olive High in 1948. He attended the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mt. Olive, and he served as president and vice-president of the congregation. He also served as secretary for their synod.

He had worked as an accountant/bookkeeper for Scheller Insurance and had been employed by Litchfield Hospital. Once a justice of the peace, he served as general assistance clerk for Mt. Olive Township until his retirement.

He served as an officer for the Mt. Olive Academic Foundation and was secretary of the Mt. Olive Senior Citizens. In addition, he belonged to the Turner Hall and was a former member of the Mt. Olive Lion's Club. An election judge, he was active in the Mother Jones Jubilee and was a noted Cardinal fan, bowler, bingo, and pinocle player.

He is survived by two brothers, Norman Viegweg, and Otto (wife Joan) Viehweg, all of Mt. Olive; three nephews, Mike (wife Marilyn) Viehweg of White City, Ed (wife Debbie) Viehweg of Mt. Olive, and John Viehweg of Kula, HI; one niece, Cathy (husband Vince) Johnston of Invergrove Heights, MN; and great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Mt. Olive Academic Foundation or to the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.
