Raymond R. Chappelear, 84

Raymond Rex Chappelear, 84, of Hillsboro, died at 7:35 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at Hillsboro Area Hospital.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, Feb. 14, at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Greenville. Young Funeral Home in Greenville assisted the family.

Mr. Chappelear was born on April 4, 1928, in Jonestown, IN, the son of the late John Rex and Mable Minnie (Bailey) Chappelear, and moved to the Hillsboro area with his family when he was three years old. He married Verda O. Langel on Oct. 7, 1951, in Greenville, and she survives.

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran of two years, Mr. Chappelear served 15 months in Sing Tao, China, with the 1st Marine Air Guard.

After the service, he attended Greenville College where he met his wife. He began farming and drove over the road trucks for Cassens, United Riss, A.B.F. and Webco for the next 18 years.

In 1971, Mr. Chappelear started working at Montery Mine in Carlinville where he was employed until he retired at 65.

After retiring, he and his wife enjoyed traveling to most states along with Canada, Mexico, Europe and Australia.

Along with his wife, Mr. Chappelear is survived by four sons, David Rex (wife Luann) Chappelear, John Charles Chappelear, Jack Allen (wife Rochelle) Chappelear, and Thomas Mark (wife Mick) Chappelear, all of Hillsboro; three daughters, Mary Lee (husband Terry) Bone of Coffeen, Teresa May (husband Steve) Boston of Greenville and Annette (husband Butch) Mikeska of Hillsboro; 11 grandchildren, Joe Chappelear, Dan Chappelear, Justin Chappelear, Jourdan Chappelear, Derek Chappelear, Jenna Kieffer, Kelli Cox, Jessica Rahn, Kevin Boston, Nathan Boston and Aaron Moore; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Jean Chappelear, and a grandson, Jeremy Chappelear.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Montgomery County Cancer Association or to the Hillsboro Area Health Foundation.
