Teresa A. Gladinus, 99, died Monday, July 7, 2014.

Services and interment will be private and held at a later date in Hillsboro.

Zimmerman-Harnett Funeral Home in Forest Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gladinus was born in Taylor Springs on Oct. 6, 1914, the daughter of Anton and Domenica Faletti. She married John Gladinus, also of Taylor Springs, in Chicago in August 1936, and he preceded her in death in 1982.

She and her husband were classmates in elementary and high school. After graduating from Hillsboro High School in 1932, she worked briefly at a Springfield hospital, then went to Chicago to work as a nanny. Upon hearing she was in Chicago, Mr. Gladinus looked her up and rode the street car four hours round trip to court her.

Mrs. Gladinus worked at Liquid Carbonic in Chicago until her first child was born, and then she enjoyed being a mother and wife. She and her husband, a Ryerson Steel foreman, raised three children in the Austin neighborhood in Chicago, then in Broadview. She later worked at Hines VA Hospital until the couple retired in the mid-1970s to Hillsboro.

She and her husband enjoyed retirement by taking driving trips across the county to visit family and friends in California, hosting family at their home in Hillsboro, fishing and caring for their beautiful garden.

After her husband's death, Mrs. Gladinus remained in Hillsboro and continued to tend to her vegetable and flower gardens, enjoyed canning and preserving what she grew, spending time with friends and hosting family visits. She was an avid reader and library patron who participated in a ladies card club and loved shopping for antiques, cooking, baking, crocheting and sewing. She shared many recipes and cooking wisdom with her family over the years.

She returned to the Chicago area in 1999 to live near her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Gladinus is survived by  her daughter Elayne Considine of Forest Park; two sons, John (Gayle) Gladinus of Long Beach CA, and Richard (Nancy) Gladinus of Edgewater, MD; three granddaughters, Karen Considine of Forest Park, Nancy (Nestor) Markewych of Berwyn and Jill (Gabriel) Wood of Fort Walton Beach, FL; four grandsons, Martin Considine of Forest Park, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Gladinus of Santee, CA, Kent (Elizabeth) Gladinus of Bellflower, CA, and Michael Gladinus of Edgewater, MD; eight great-grandchildren; and son-in-law, Martin Considine.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother,  Ludwig; and a sister, Alba.

Donations may be made to the Hillsboro Public Library, 214 School St., Hillsboro, IL, 62049.
