Virginia Lee (Sturgeon) Thomasson, 95, of Alton died at 2:36 p.m. Saturday March 15, 2014,  at St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton.

There will be no visitation. A family graveside service will be held at Upper Alton Cemetery with Pastor Gerald MeCaskey officiating.

Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Thomasson was born on March 10, 1919, in Hillsboro, the daughter of the late Leo and Orlene (Nesbit) Sturgeon. She married H. Leland Thomasson on May 23, 1943.

She attended school in Hillsboro and graduated from Alton High School and Wells Business School. She worked for M.C. Galloway Advertising Company, Sauvage Advertising Company and later at Owens Illinois Glass Company in the accounting department.

During WWII, Mrs. Thomasson traveled in the western U.S. with her husband, and after the war they settled in Alton.

She was a longtime member of Cherry Street Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and served on the Board of Diaconate. She collected for the March of Dimes. She loved her family, enjoyed reading, sewing, crossword puzzles and watching Wheel of Fortune and Lawrence Welk on TV.

Mrs. Thomasson is survived by two daughters, Christina Poole and Ellen (Jill) Thomasson; one grandson, Joseph (wife Shani) Poole; and great-grandchildren, Keaton Poole and Nolan Poole.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Thomasson was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Martha Sturgeon.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or a charity of one’s choice.
