Envision Witt is sponsoring a mostaccioli fundraiser for the Witt Township Memorial Library on Sunday, March 31, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Witt United Methodist Church, located at 213 N. 2nd Street in Witt.
In coordination with the event, the First Presbyterian Church of Witt is providing some provisions for the meal. The meal consists of mostaccioli, salad, homemade rolls, dessert and drink. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for kids under 12. There are carryouts available by calling 217-594-2426. All proceeds will benefit the Witt Township Memorial Library.
The Witt Township Memorial Library has been in existence for over 59 years at its current location. It provides services for the Witt Township for a population of 1,163 people.
Sue Van Ostran of Witt is the head librarian and Cheryl Randel is the assistant librarian. The library has provided services to families according to criteria such as low adult reading level, tutoring, assistance with obtaining a GED, and children in the family under five years of age.
Van Ostran has a “Wish List” of items that would greatly benefit the Witt library. First on the list would be to acquire a faster and much higher speed internet. The current internet speed and hook-up doesn’t allow people to bring in their laptop computers and have access to the internet to participate in any online activities.
Next on the list is to have additional laptops available for use at the library. Today, nearly every public library system across the country offers free internet access through computer terminals.
Public libraries stand out as one of the few community institutions and resources that offer people of all ages free public access computers, internet access and reference support to search for jobs, take classes, complete homework assignments, obtain medical information and receive government information and services.
The wiring of public libraries has transformed one of the nation’s most established community resources into a critical digital hub, where patrons can compete more effectively for jobs, improve their health and find key government services.
In a world increasingly defined by technology, the public library is one of the widest bridges to the internet and computers, not only for those who cannot afford their own connection, but for those who find the library is an easier, faster, friendlier or more effective way to use these tools.
Van Ostran mentioned another item on the list would be to have a cordless phone installed. There is also some inside remodeling that needs to be done such as painting and possibly new shelving.
In July 2018, the Envision Witt group gave the outside of the library a facelift with a coat of paint. The project not only changed the looks of the library, but also enhanced the beauty of the town. The Envision Witt group would like to ask for everyone’s support in the surrounding communities to make the library fundraiser a huge success.
Monetary donations are greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at the Witt Township Memorial Library, located at 18 North 2nd Street in Witt. Donations may also be sent to the Witt United Methodist Church, c/o Envision Witt, P.O. Box 425, Witt, IL 62094.
