300 Helps Toppers Roll To Win At Edwardsville

Posted

A 300 in bowling may be perfect, but a 300 for a four person team in golf is pretty special as it turns out, too.

Playing in the Dick Gerber Invitational at Oak Brook Golf Club in Edwardsville, the Hillsboro boys golf team shot an astounding 16-over-par as a team, posting an even 300 to take the top spot in the small school ranks.

Hillsboro's round would be the best by four strokes over parochial power Breese Mater Dei, who was second by 12 strokes over third place Belleville Althoff. Edwardsville's top team would take the big school title with a 312, beating O'Fallon by one stroke.

Not only did the Toppers take the top spot as a team, they grabbed individual medalist honors for the tournament as well. Alex White would shoot a 3-under-par 68 to earn the top spot by two strokes over Triad's Garrett Wood and Mater Dei's Carter Goebel. The trio were the only three players to shoot under par, with Edwardsville's Trevor Laub and O'Fallon's Logan Lowery rounding out the top five with a pair of 71s.

All four Hillsboro players who scored for the Toppers would be fewer than ten strokes under par. Alex Eickhoff would be just behind the top five with a 3-over 74, while Dane Huber and Owen Malloy finished with matching 79s on the day.

Wilson Hamby would follow the group with a solid 88, while Gunnar Micnheimer finished in the sixth slot for HHS with a 98.

Hillsboro chased that win with another in Edwardsville on Saturday, Sept. 28, as they won a six-team best ball tournament with an even-par 216 at Fox Creek Golf Course. Once again, Hillsboro also had another low score at the event, with Eickhoff and Malloy shooting a 67 for the lowest two-player score.

The two Edwardsville tournaments were a warm-up for the final week of the regular season, which starts on Monday, Sept. 30, at the South Central Conference tournament at Indian Springs Golf Course. The Hillsboro JV team will play at Carlinville on Oct. 3, with the Varsity heading to Lake Shore Golf Course in Taylorville on Oct. 5, for the Tornadoes' annual invitational.
