Forty-eight young players from the Class of 2019, hailing from 15 different schools, competed in this year's Grace Cup boys and girls soccer games at Terry Todt/RHSA Field in Raymond on Saturday, June 8. The game is held annually to raise awareness for infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy in honor of seven-year-old Grace Herschelman of Hillsboro, who is battling INAD.
In the girls game, the Gray Team, comprised of South Central Conference schools, took a 3-0 halftime lead with goals from Katelin Weideman of Pana, Aubry Rupert of Hillsboro and Shania Schoonover of Pana. The Purple Team, comprised of players from Rochester, Auburn, Lutheran and North Mac, came back to cut the lead to one with two goals by Kaelee Dyer of Rochester, but the Gray Team held on for the 3-2 win. Dyer and Pana's Jeannine Swenny were named Most Valuable Players for the girls game.
In the boys game, the score was 1-1 at halftime after the two teams scored within minutes of each other, with Lucas Petersen of Springfield Lutheran giving the Purple Team the early lead before the equalizer by the Gray Team's Noah Birk of Staunton made it 1-1. Petersen would go on to score twice more in the second half for the Purple Team to give them a 3-1 lead. Petersen and Birk were named Most Valuable Players for the boys game.
This year's Grace Cup, coupled with the Lincolnwood alumni soccer game, raised over $650 for INAD research through the INAD Cure Foundation. The cost of this year's jerseys were covered by RehabEdge of Hillsboro, Wendy's of Litchfield, Maverick Steaks and Spirits of Litchfield, the Carlinville High School soccer program and Creative Flair of Litchfield, who also printed the shirts.
