Last year, the Hillsboro girls basketball handed the Marquette Explorers one of their biggest losses of the season by a 64-38 final score. On Monday, Dec. 9, the Explorers, who went on to win 22 games last season, returned the favor.
Using a 28-point third quarter, the visitors from the Alton private school handed Hillsboro their fourth loss of the young season by a 68-40 final score.
While the third quarter was the proverbial nail in the coffin, the troubles started early for Hillsboro, who was held to just four points on two baskets by Nikya Harston in the first quarter.
The Toppers would rebound in the second though, getting six more points from Harston and outscoring Marquette 11-10 in the frame. Claire Tester (three) and Layne Rupert (two) also scored for Hillsboro, who looked to decrease the 24-15 margin even more in the second half.
It wouldn’t be meant to be though as the sophomore trio of Kamryn Fandrey, Abby Williams and Adrenna Snipes powered the Explorers to double their point total and take a commanding 52-25 lead. Snipes had nine points, while Fandrey added eight and Williams chipped in three for Marquette.
Layne Rupert would get hot in the fourth quarter, scoring seven of her 13 points in the frame, but Marquette added one to their lead and picked up their sixth victory against just one loss.
Harston would lead all scorers with 16 points, followed by Rupert with 13 and Claire Tester with five. Emma Miller, Emily Reynolds and Maddy Rupert would also have two points apiece.
Both Snipes (14) and Williams (13) would be in double figures for Marquette, while Jillian Nelson, yet another sophomore, and Fandrey added nine and eight respectively.
Hillsboro’s schedule will continue to test the Toppers early as they take on Greenville on Thursday, Dec. 12, on the Comets’ home floor. Greenville is a deceptive 3-4 on the season, with losses to Belleville West (by two in OT), Pana (by two), Nashville (by two) and Marquette (by one).
