Alvin E. Redding, 81, of Sorento died Friday, Nov. 8, 2019 at 7:05 a.m. at his home.

Cremation rites will be accorded and burial will be private. The family will hold a celebration of his life at the firehouse in Sorento on Sunday, Nov. 17, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Young Funeral Home in Greenville is assisting the family.

Mr. Redding was born Aug. 14, 1938 on the family farm in Sorento  to O. Elton and Cora (Grigg) Redding. He married Betty (Pryor) Denny on Feb. 22, 1964 at his brother’s home in Granite City, and she survives.

A lifelong painter, Mr. Redding's career started by painting bridges for a railroad in northern Illinois. In 1960, he started painting with Tip Martin in Greenville, and joined the Painters Local Union 910, where he was a member for 59 years. In 1970, he started Redding Painting.

Outside of painting, he loved to hunt deer and was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinal fan.

In addition to his wife of 55 years, Mr. Redding is survived by five children, twins Donald (Delores) Redding of Sorento, and Donna Redding (Steve) Hasenmeyer of Greenville,Richard Denny of Butler, Sheryl Denny (Rick Crawford) of Litchfield and Gail (Doug) Smith of New Douglas. He also helped raise Jennifer Hoxsey of Sorento.

Mr. Redding is also survived by his siblings, Fern (Vince) Lovett of O’Fallon, Mary (Virgil) Ponder of Indialatic, FL and Glen (Naomi) Redding of Sorento; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
