Even though Bremer Sanctuary in Hillsboro has cancelled its April events–the Spring Bird Walk scheduled for April 18 and the Earth Day Celebration and Woodland Wildflower Walk set for April 25–work continues at the Illinois Audubon Society sanctuary.
“Four hours a day for about a month,” Bill Hunyadi of Plainview said of the amount of work he has already put in clearing brush and honeysuckle for a new savanna area north of the Bremer barn.
A savanna is a mixed woodland-grassland ecosystem characterized by the trees being sufficiently widely spaced so that the canopy does not close. On Wednesday Hunyadi, a retired biologist for the state of Missouri, was using a walk-behind brush mower on the hilly terrain to clear the undergrowth.
Even though April events have been cancelled, Bremer hiking trails remain open from dawn till dusk, provided walkers use proper social distancing procedures.
The next scheduled event will be the Summer Bird Walk beginning at 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 6.
Further information on scheduled programs may be found online on the sanctuary’s website at www.bremersanctuary.org/.
