A balanced effort against Mt. Olive led to the Lincolnwood boys basketball team’s second win of the year on Friday, Dec. 6, as the Lancers defeated the Wildcats 47-24.
The Lincolnwood defense held Mt. Olive to just two points in the first quarter, the first of four straight quarters the Wildcats would be held to single digits. On offense, Cole Sidwell hit a pair of threes and a two to account for eight of Lincolnwood’s 14 points.
The Lancers would spread the wealth around in the second quarter as Braden Whalen, Shawn Goebel and Devin Brown all had four points apiece, with Will Jenkins knocking down a three for good measure. The balance on offense, coupled with another staunch defensive effort, left Lincolnwood in front 29-7 at halftime.
In the second half, Mt. Olive’s Trent Markezich would catch fire. After scoring five of his team’s seven points in the first half, the Mt. Olive sophomore lit up the scoreboard for seven in the third quarter and seven more in the fourth quarter for a game-best 19.
In spite of Markezich’s success, Mt. Olive fell further behind as Lincolnwood held the Wildcats to just three points from other sources. Sam Herman scored five points in the Lancers’ 11-9 third quarter, which gave them a 40-16 lead. Mt. Olive would outscore Lincolnwood 8-7 in the fourth, but by then, the Lancers had the game under control as they came away with a 23-point victory.
Eight different players would score for Lincolnwood, led by Herman with nine. Shawn Goebel and Cole Sidwell would add eight each, followed by Braden Whalen with seven, Will Jenkins with five, Evan Hopper and Devin Brown with four each and Dalton Thomas with two.
Markezich led the way with 19 points, but no other Mt. Olive player had more than two.
Lincolnwood will face a pair of county foes in their next two games as they play at Hillsboro on Tuesday, Dec. 10, followed by a match-up with Litchfield at 5 p.m. at the T. Todt Shootout, which will be held on the Lancers’ home floor this year. The 16-team, eight-game event starts at 9:30 a.m. with the Lincolnwood and Hillsboro girls squaring off and culminates with the Hillsboro boys playing New Berlin at 8 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Montgomery County Cancer Association in honor of the long-time WSMI broadcaster Terry Todt, who passed away earlier this year after a long battle with cancer.
