Bill Edward Newton, 77, of Sherman, died Tuesday, July 7, 2020, at 1:40 a.m. at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Visitation will be held Monday, July 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Staab Funeral Home in Sherman. A private funeral service will be held. A second visitation will be held Wednesday, July 15, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Blue Funeral Home in Goreville, followed by burial at 2:30 p.m. in Cana Cemetery. 

Mr. Newton was born Nov. 13, 1942, in Carbondale, to Robert Ralls and Fannie Aileen (Henley) Newton. He married Donna Sue Perry on Sept. 26, 1964, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 4, 1999.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Springfield. He was a graduate of SIU in Carbondale and served on the board for the School of Engineering. He was a member of Goreville Masonic Lodge and was listed in the Who’s Who National Organization of Engineers.  He was a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and was a member of the Titanic Historical Society.

A retired electrical engineer for CIPS/Ameren, he spent his retirement years traveling to Europe, San Francisco, CA, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and enjoying the company of his family and friends. 

He is survived by two sons, Todd (Tracie) Newton and Sean (Melissa) Newton, both of Sherman; and four grandchildren, Grant, Bryce, Nick (Brittani) and Emma Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
