Brandon Edward Mathis, 90, of Staunton, died on Thursday, June 4, 2020, at 3:15 p.m. at his daughter’s residence surrounded by his family.

Private family graveside services and burial will be held in Chapman Cemetery in Mt. Olive. Military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Becker and Son Funeral Home in Mt. Olive is assisting the family.

Mr. Mathis was born June 18, 1929, in Dover, TN, to William and Ruby (Brandon) Mathis. He married Yvonne Sue Lakin on July 26, 1953, and she preceded him in death on May 9, 2015.

He retired as a Sergeant Major, after 35 years of service in the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of the Korean War, and while serving, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.

Mr. Mathis was employed by Granite City Steel for 43 years. He was a member of the Local 16 United Steel Workers of America.

He is survived by his daughter, Tammy (Dennis) Martin of Staunton; five sons, Keith Mathis of Atlanta, GA, Scott Mathis of Mt. Olive, Greg (Karen) Mathis of Woodriver, Tracy (Jillyen) Mathis of Fayetteville, NC, and Daniel (Beth) Mathis of Staunton; ten grandsons, Dennis Gaddis of Litchfield, Justin and Jake Mathis of Mt. Olive, Chad (Ashley) Mathis of Staunton, Corey Mathis of Bloomington, Zack Mathis of Mt. Olive, CJ (Kari) Mathis of Taylorville, Caleb (Kate) Mathis of Shelbyville, Zach Mathis of Staunton and Jake Hartman of Mt. Olive; five granddaughters, Courtney Mathis of St. Louis, MO, Mason Mathis of Atlanta, GA, Lauren, Emma and Lillie Mathis of Staunton; and five great-grandchildren, Theo Mathis, Jett and James Mathis, and Tage and Maylin Mathis.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Orbin, Edison, Aaron and William Mathis; sister, Lillie Mae Keel; and one great-grandchild, William Lee Mathis.
