A missing 15-year-old Sorento girl is now safe, and a 42-year-old California man is in federal custody for abduction.
Chandler E. Saso, 42, from Marysville, CA, was taken into custody by Nebraska Highway Patrol on Friday, Jan. 8, a day after he allegedly left Sorento with the teen, who was taken into protective custody.
According to Bond County Sheriff James Leitschuh, Sorento Police asked for assistance on Thursday, Jan. 7, in locating a 15-year-old female missing from Sorento. Initially, the Shoal Creek Fire Department and a police K-9 were called in to help in the search, but information optained by the Bond County Sheriff’s Department led them to believe the teen had left the area in a white 2020 Toyota Corolla driven by an older male subject, and may be on their way to California.
The Bond County Sheriff’s Department put out a missing/endangered advisory, and continued the investigation with help from the Illinois State Police, US Marshals Service, Secret Service, and FBI. Early Friday, Jan. 8, Bond County State’s Attorney Dora Mass issued a warrant for Saso, who was later taken into custody in Nebraska.
The US Attorney’s Office has taken over the case for prosecution of federal charges, along with the US Secret Service office in Fairview Heights.
“I would like to thank the following agencies for their assistance with this incident,” Sheriff Leitschuh said, “Bond County Sheriff’s deputies, Bond County Sheriff’s Department telecommunication, Sorento Police Department, Greenville Police Department, Shoal Creek Fire Department, SARS K-9, Bond County States Attorney’s Office, Bond County Unit 2 Staff, Illinois State Police, United States Marshals Service, United States Secret Service Fairview Heights, FBI Fairview Heights, United States Attorney’s Office Southern District and Nebraska Highway Patrol. I would also like to thank the public for their assistance which played a major role in this investigation.”
