Carl James Manuel, 81, of Stonington, died Monday, Sept. 21, 2020, at 9:57 a.m. at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Sept. 24, at 11:30 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Rob Bates officiating. Shafer-Perfetti and Assalley Funeral Home in Taylorville is assisting the family.

Mr. Manuel was born Dec. 19, 1938, in Taylorville, the son of Carl Oscar and Dorothy (Hunt) Manuel. He married Luwauna German on July 11, 1987, in Taylorville, and she survives.

A 1956 graduate of Taylorville High School, he went on to work as a belt repairman for the Peabody #10 mine for 40 years. He then worked an additional two years for the mine in Sparta. He was also a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Morrisonville.

He was a hardworking and dedicated coal miner, receiving many awards during his time of service. He loved coon hunting, trading dogs and training horses, but most of all, he loved his family. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Debra (husband Michael) Fulcher of Kincaid and Rickie Manuel of Florissant, MO; grandchildren, Curtis (wife Lindsey) Dixon of Taylorville and Kelsey Marie Fulcher of Kincaid; stepchildren, Denise (husband Rob) Bates and Mark (wife Candy) Spencer, both of Sullivan, Bret (wife Charity) Spencer of Owaneco and Pastor Bart (wife Sue) Spencer of Holland, MI; 17 stepgrandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; siblings, Pamela (husband Denny) Lynch and Gary Manuel, both of Taylorville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
