Going into this year, Litchfield senior Will Carlile hadn’t lost a match since narrowly losing to Nate Orosco in the 120-pound fourth place match at the 2019 IHSA State Championships. After going 41-0 last year en route to a state championship, Carlile’s amazing run came to an end on April 30, when he lost to Abe Wojcikiewicz of Civic Memorial by fall with seven seconds left in the match.
On Wednesday, May 13, Carlile got the chance to meet up with Wojcikiewicz again, during the Panthers’ dual with the Eagles in Bethalto.
Carlile, who hasn’t lost since that opening match, avenged the defeat with a 3-2 decision over the eighth ranked wrestler at 160 pounds in Class 2A according to the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association and helped his team to an improved performance against the Eagles.
In April, Litchfield lost 51-6 to Civic Memorial, with their only points coming from a forfeit win by Alex Powell at 113. On Wednesday, Carlile’s win was one of two contested victories for the Panthers, who scored 13 more points than the last time in a 40-19 loss.
The other contested win came at 145 pounds, where Aaron Roach def. Mason Walker by major decision, 13-5. Litchfield also picked up forfeit victories at 106 and 120 from Alex Powell and Carter Powell to make up the rest of their 19 points.
Civic Memorial would pick up forfeit wins at 126, 170, 182 and 285, and would win contested matches at 132, 138 and 152. Double forfeits would come at 113, 195 and 220 pounds.
The match with Civic Memorial was one of two to end the week for Litchfield as they traveled to Chatham on Saturday, May 15, to face Glenwood and Riverton. Litchfield picked up a win over Riverton 34-18 in one of the bouts and fell to Glenwood 65-9 in the other.
Carlile would pick up another victory in the match with Glenwood as he defeated Aden Byal 7-0. Carter Powell would have Litchfield’s other six points with a forfeit win at 120 pounds.
Twelve of the 14 matches would be forfeits in the Riverton match, with Litchfield’s Aaron Roach, Brandon Malloy, Carter Powell and Ashtin Carver picking up six free points.
The Panthers would win both contested matches as well, with Carlile and Alex Powell both getting victories.
