Carlyle and Staunton were both winners in round two of the Litchfield High School Girls Basketball Round Robin played Monday evening, Nov. 19, in Simmons Gymnasium.
It was the first appearance of the tournament for Coach Janelle Kuhn's Lady Indians of Carlyle who had a bye in the tournament opener on Nov. 17 and an impressive performance it was. Junior Molly Diekemper and senior Brooklynn Smith combined to score 47 of Carlyle's 54 game points in their 54-31 win over the Nokomis Redskins.
The tandem accounted for all of the Indians' first quarter points to help Carlyle build a 12-2 lead. However, the Redskin offense responded in the second period as Emily Cesaretti hit a three, Mia Fesser scored four points, Kristen Stauder added a deuce and Macee Eisenbarth chipped in a free throw to keep it close with a Carlyle halftime lead of 25-12.
The third quarter belonged to Smith and Diekemper as Smith dropped in six points while Diekemper hit for ten, including two from deep, as the 13-point halftime lead grew to 21 at the end of the third quarter. Cesaretti, Fesser and Eisenbarth carried the scoring load in the period for Nokomis, combining for nine points.
The two teams each scored evenly in the final quarter of play and with three minutes left on the clock, Coach Kuhn began to substitute freely, as did Coach Engelman.
For Nokomis, Cesaretti finished the game as the team's scoring leader with nine points followed closely by Fesser with eight and Stauder and Eisenbarth each with five. The Redskins connected on just 9-of-39 two-point baskets and 3-of-10 from the three-point land. They grabbed 25 rebounds and had eight steals, but turned the ball over 17 times.
Unlike the evening opener, the outcome of the second game was not decided until the final seconds when Staunton's Savannah Bruhn sealed the deal in the 50-47 Bulldog victory.
Although Coach Steve Wooley's Piasa Birds trailed the Bulldogs for the majority of the game, they kept chipping away and took the lead late in the fourth period on a three pointer from #4, sophomore Josie Bouillon.
Ironically, Staunton's #4, Savannah Bruhn, would answer with her own three to retake the lead. With time running down, Southwestern turned the ball back over to Staunton and Bruhn canned 1-of-2 free throws to preserve the Bulldog win, their second in two appearances.
Play continued on Tuesday, Nov. 20, with Staunton facing Carlyle and Litchfield taking on Southwestern. Those games, along with results from Friday and Saturday, will be in the Nov. 26 edition of The Journal-News.
