Carol J. Ruelas, 77, of Highland, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020, at HSHS St. Elizabeth's Hospital in O'Fallon.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 31, from 9 to 10 a.m. at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. Funeral services will follow at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Father Pat G. Jakel officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in Iberia Cemetery in Iberia, MO.

Mrs. Ruelas was born June 22, 1942, in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of Louis and Maude (Schatte) Bersin. She married Salvador C. Ruelas on June 18, 1966, in St. Louis, MO, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 1984.

She was born at home on Lee Avenue and grew up in St. Louis, Mo. She graduated from Central High School, and worked at Brown Shoe Company in St. Louis, MO.

After she started her family, she stayed at home with her children. In 2004, she moved to Highland into Faith Countryside Apartments.

A member of St. Paul Catholic Church, she was also a former member of the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in St. Louis, MO. She loved to read, play Bingo and collect bird figurines.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa C. (significant other Nathan Bickell) Ruelas of Raymond; sons, Michael J. (Tricia) Ruelas, Sr. of Arnold, MO and Salvador A. (Charlotte) Ruelas, St. Louis, Mo; grandchildren, Jason M. (Deana) Ruelas, Stephanie M. (Brett) Boegeman, Michael J. Ruelas, Jr. and Ramona R. Ruelas; and great-grandchildren, Alexis Ruelas, Benjamin Ruelas and Charles Ruelas.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by son, Antonio R. Ruelas; brothers, Merle Bersin, Robert Bersin, William Bersin and Richard Bersin; and sisters, Marion Bailey, Floy Stefanske, Doris Raymo and Gail Bersin.
