With games against Gillespie and Southwestern cancelled, the Hillsboro volleyball team made their way to Carlinville on Tuesday, Oct. 19, in search of their first conference win of the season.
For a while, it looked as if that might be a possibility for the Lady Hiltoppers, but a long first half string by the Cavaliers sealed the deal in game one and gave them momentum in game two for a 25-13, 25-13 victory.
The visiting Hiltoppers would go toe-to-toe with the home team early on in the first game with the score tied at 7-7. The two teams would trade points, with Hillsboro staying within two, until the wheels began to fall off for the Toppers.
Carlinville senior Ella Walker took over serving duties after the Cavies got the side out to make it 12-10 and didn’t give up the ball until the Carlinville lead was 23-10. Finally, Kaci Papin stopped the bleeding with a block, but Hillsboro would manage just two more points before Carlinville closed out the 12-point win.
The Cavaliers carried the momentum from game one over to game two as they led 7-2 early on. Hillsboro got within three a short time after that, but Carlinville continued to build on their lead and held a 19-7 advantage at one point. Kills by Papin and Layne Rupert would get the margin down to single digits down the stretch, but Hillsboro could not cut the lead down any further and fell to 9-17 on the season an 0-5 in the South Central Conference. Carlinville improved to 20-14 with the win and 3-4 in the SCC.
The Toppers closed out the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 20, with a match-up against Litchfield. The two teams had met in a non-conference bout earlier in the season, which Litchfield won 25-16, 25-21, and will meet again on Monday, Oct. 25, in the opening game of the Carlinvile Regional.
