Charles Frederick Ettling, 87, of Wood River, died on Friday, April 17, 2020, at 4:45 p.m. at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.

Private graveside services will be held. Stiehl-Dawson Funeral Home in Nokomis is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ettling was born Dec. 1, 1932, in Witt, to William and Anna (Charnisky) Ettling. He married Nancy Read on March 23, 1963, and she survives.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Navy. He also served as a tool and die maker, retiring from McDonnell Douglas/Boeing after 39 years.

Mr. Ettling was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and was an outdoorsman. He was a beloved husband, dad and grandpa, who was always there to share a laugh, offer advice and help in any way he could, and will be dearly missed.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Dr. Jeffery (wife Holly) Ettling of Wichita, KS, Timothy Ettling of Bethalto, Jill (husband Lorin) Smith of East Alton and Brian Ettling of Hammond, IN; grandchildren, Mallory Smith, Cody Smith, Timothy Smith, Emmalee Smith, Simon Bramblett and Ryan Bolanos; siblings, Bill and Margaret Ettling of Jackson, MO, Sharon Wiley of Chatham and Ed and Deana Ettling of Witt.
