Chesser Now Faces Charges Of Murder

A Litchfield man who has been in jail since a Sept. 20 shooting in Hillsboro has been formally charged with two counts of first degree murder, according to Montgomery County State's Attorney Bryant Hitchings.

David L. Chesser, 69, of Litchfield, is charged in the death of Mary A. (Burke) Chesser, 68, of Hillsboro, who died on Oct. 1 from injuries suffered in the Sept. 20 shooting outside the Free Methodist Church on the southwest side of Hillsboro.  The victim had managed to drive her car a few blocks north of the church before crashing into a tree at the corner of  Seymour and Fairground Avenue.  She was taken to Hillsboro Area Hospital then transferred to St. John's in Springfield.

The murder charges allege that Chesser fired two shots at the victim.  He has also been charged with felony aggravated discharge of a firearm, alleging that he fired the shots within 1,000 feet of Beckemeyer School while school was in session.

Probable cause was found for the new charges during a preliminary hearing in front of Judge Doug Jarman on Thursday, Oct. 10.  A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, and a jury trial has been set for Dec. 2.  Public defender Erin Mattson is representing the defendant.

Chesser remains in custody at Montgomery County Jail on $1 million bond.
