The University of Illinois-Springfield is on a roll winning their last four softball games.
Mandy Smith (Nokomis), a University of Illinois-Springfield sophomore, has scored or driven home a run in three of the their last four games. Her best effort was in the last four games was the most recent game. In the 6-5 win over Drury University, Smith smacked her second double of the year, going one-for-four. She drove home one run, scored once and stole one base.
She also drove home a run, had a hit or scored a hit in the three other games. In the 5-0 win over Missouri University of Science and Technology, Smith drove home one. She walked and scored in the 6-3 loss to Missouri University of Science of Technology. The former Redskin was 1-for-4 in the 5-4 win over Drury University. The University of Illinois-Springfield is 11-9 overall and 6-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Texas Christian University's Brooke Beeler (Hillsboro) shot a 233 at the Louisiana State University Golf Classic, which was held at the University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Beeler, who finished 40th overall, shot a low round of 72. Texas Christian finished 12th with a 937. University of Tennessee took first with an 880.
Greenville College's Dylan Goldsmith (Nokomis) was 3-for-3 to help the GC Panthers defeat Edgewood College 10-4. Goldsmith, who also stole a base, scored three runs. He also had a hit in Greenville's 6-2 loss to Anderson University. Greenville is 2-10.
Washington University's Katie Homa (Hillsboro) took 12th at the Phoenix Invitational, which was hosted by George Fox University. The golfers competed on the Westbrook Village Golf Course in Peoria, Arizona. Homa, who finished with a total stroke count of 173 for 36 holes, shot a low round of 83 in the second and final round. Washington University finished second with a 602. George Fox finished first with a 595.
Eastern Illinois University junior Lauren Williams (Hillsboro) finished 30th in the Benbow Invitational, which was hosted by Butler University and held at the Jacksonville Beach Golf Club in Jacksonville, Florida. Williams shot a 166 for 36 holes. She shot an 82 in the second and final round. Eastern Illinois took seventh with a 662. Indiana University/Purdue University-Indianapolis won the outing with a 614.
Maryville University pitcher Shane Herschelman (Lincolnwood) and Robert Morris University-Springfield's Corbin Govaia (Litchfield) had an opportunity to play against each other as Maryville defeate RMU-Springfield in a doubleheader. In opening game of the twin bill, Herschelman, a sophomore righty, worked two innings, fanning three and walking two. He did not get the win in the 7-2 Maryville victory. In the 15-0 RMU-Springfield loss in the second game, Govaia was 1-for-3. Maryville is 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. RMU-Springfield is 3-5 overall.
Florida Southern College's Shane Convery (Lincolnwood) took 44th in the Southeastern Collegiate Tournament. The outing was hosted by Valdosta State University and held at Kinderlou Forest in Valdosta, Georgia. Convery opened with a low round of 74 and finished with a 54-hole score of 226. As a team, Florida Southern finished seventh with a score of 874. University of North Alabama won the team title with a stroke count of 841.
Paige Cullison (Hillsboro), an Illinois College two-sport athlete, has a .261 batting average through the first eight softball games. Cullison, who has started every game, has six hits in 23 trips to the plate. Of her hits, one is a triple. She has six runs scored, four stolen bases and one walk. Cullison has a slugging percentage of .348 and an on-base percentage of .292. Illinois College is 2-6.
McKendree University opened their spring season by taking sixth in the University of Illinois-Springfield Invitational. The outing was held at the Pekin Country Club in Pekin. The McKendree Bearcats finished sixth with a 619. Illinois-Springfield took first with a 602. Ryan Bennett (Hillsboro), a McKendree golfer, took 65th with a 175 over 36 holes. He opened with a low round of 86.
Lindenwood University got an 18th place finish from Kasey McCammack (Hillsboro) as the Lady Lions took second in the Christian Brothers University Spring Invitational. The outing was held at the Quail ridge Golf Club in Bartlett, Tennessee. McCammack finished with a 36-hole score of 186. The Lindenwood senior shot a low round of 91 in the second and final round. Lindenwood finished a 661, 11 strokes from the winning total of 650 posted by Cumberland University.
The Southwestern Illinois College women's basketball team is currently involved in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Nationals. The national championships are being held at the Bicentennial Center in Salina, KS. They were defeated in their opening round game, 75-53, by Central Arizona College. To earn the trip to nationals, they defeated Olney Central College 62-58. Stats were not available for Morgan White (Hillsboro), a SWIC sophomore. It is unclear weather she played in either contest. SWIC continues the national tournament with a 27-7 mark.
