On Friday, Oct. 30, Sierra Compton was handing out treats with her family at the Envision Witt Trunk or Treat event. On Saturday, it was her turn to get something special.
For the second year in a row, the Hillsboro High School sophomore competed in the sectional cross country meet, this year held on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Hickory Point Golf Course in Decatur.
Going up against some of the best of the best, Compton would run a 21:45.6 to finish 68th in the 117 runner field. That time is almost a minute faster than her time from last year’s sectional and 22 places better than her 90th place finish a year ago in Effingham.
The run in Decatur caps a fantastic year not only for Compton, who won two races individually, and the Toppers, who won their first meet in at least 20 years.
The season also had its share of “what-ifs” as Hillsboro was missing some key runners for conference and regionals, which could have helped their finish in both events.
The team, which is not funded by the school district, will lose seniors Vanessa Compton, Alecia Miller, Jade Christian and Kelsey Holtgrave, but return Sierra Compton, Avery Smith and Meagan White, who will all be juniors.
To keep momentum in the program going, Coach Rem Dyas will need a few more bodies out next year. Odds are that Compton will continue to excel over the next two years, but if a few more can join her out on the trails of the South Central Conference and beyond, the sky’s the limit for the Lady Hiltoppers.
