Construction Flagger Airlifted After Accident

A Donnellson man was airlifted from the scene by a medical helicopter that landed on the highway when he was struck by a vehicle while working a construction project at 11:25 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11.

Hiram L. Renfro, 74, of Donnellson, was airlifted to a regional hospital with what Illinois State Police called non-life threatening injuries.

According to state police, Renfro was working as a flagger on a construction project on Route 127, just south of Donnellson in Bond County.  A southbound vehicle driven by Jerry A. Thacker, 60, of Mulberry Grove, struck Renfro with the front driver’s side.

The driver was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, failure to yield to construction workers and disobeying a flagger in a construction zone.
