County Runners Roll At Southwestern

Montgomery County’s cross country teams were a bright spot in Brighton (or close to it) on Tuesday, Sept. 22, as both races held at Southwestern High School were won by county runners.

In the boys’ race, Will Carlile posted a time of 17:02 to beat Will Meyer by eight seconds and Brody Harris by 30 seconds, two Carlinville runners who had beat the Litchfield senior earlier in the year.

Camden Quarton and Gavin Thimsen would give Litchfield two more runners in the top five as they ran times of 17:59 and 18:29 respectively.

Kevin Pollard, Sam Horn and Eithan Rigsbey would also finish back-to-back-to-back, with Pollard clocking in at 18:57 and Horn and Rigsbey running 19:20 and 19:21.

A little further back were Alex DeLaCruz in 19th with a time of 19:52, Brandon Malloy in 23rd with a time of 20:25, Cy Cress in 34th with a time of 23:12 and Peyton Baugher in 40th with a time of 29:35.

The Panthers’ success would give them 29 points in the team standings, good enough for first place by two points over Carlinville. Greenville would finish third with 60 points, while Southwestern and Pana had individual runners.

In the girls’ race, county runners took five of the top six positions, with Carlinville’s Megan Carrino the only outsider, sneaking in at number five.

The sibling tandem of Sierra and Vanessa Compton would go 1-2 at the race, posting times of 21:11 and 22:04. Unofficially, the win by Compton would be Hillsboro’s first since Blake DeLong ran independently for the Toppers in 2008.

The Comptons were joined in the top 15 by Kelsey Holtgrave, who finished in a time of 25:34 to claim 15th, while Avery Smith and Megan White were 18th and 19th with times of 26:25 and 26:26. Jade Christian rounded out the runners for Hillsboro, finishing 31st with a time of 32:38.

Hillsboro would nearly pick off Carlinville in the team standings, accumulating 44 points, two fewer than Carlinville. Southwestern was third with 65 points, while Greenville and Pana were tied for fourth with 87.

While Litchfield didn’t have enough runners to qualify for a team score, they made up for the lack of quantity with a plethora of quality.

All four Lady Panthers finished 16th or better, with three finishing in the top six.

Delani Ulrich finished three seconds behind Vanessa Compton, with a time of 22:07, to take third in the race, while Myka Fenton was fourth with a time of 22:28. Kylee Eiting added to the success with a sixth place finish in 23:03, while Karly Kruse wasn’t far behind in 16th with a time of 25:37.

Litchfield and Hillsboro will be together again on Tuesday, Sept. 29, as the Purple Panthers host their lone home meet of the season.
