The Lincolnwood volleyball program has had plenty of memorable matches against conference rival Springfield Lutheran in years past. Tuesday night’s home game against the Crusaders is a contest the Lancers would probably rather forget.
Lutheran is tall, athletic, well coached and hits hard enough to spin the stitches off the ball. As of March 23, they are also 4-0 thanks to a 25-17, 25-12 victory over Lincolnwood, who had one of those games where few things seemed to go right.
One of the bright spots for the Lancers was the serving of Maggie McClelland, who led the team with four points and three aces. Two of the aces came late in game one as the Lancers tried to claw their way out of a 20-11 hole.
The senior hitter would help get her team back within six, but Lutheran closed out the game two rotations later. Looking to rally, Lincolnwood tried to comeback in game two and pulled within two points, 7-5, after Emme Weller served up her third point of the match.
Lutheran re-upped their lead to five points after breaking Weller’s serve, allowing Lincolnwood to pull within three in their next turn at the serving line, with Avery Pope picking up her second service point.
Then the wheels fell off. The Crusaders racked up point after point, while keeping the Lancers from stringing any together. Five straight trips to the service line were one and done for the orange and black as Lutheran came away with a 25-12 win to sew up the match.
The Lincolnwood defense had their hands full on the night, with the three-headed monster of Makenna Cox (nine), Erin Borntreger (eight) and Delaney Scheidenhelm (six) combining for 23 kills.
Cassie Krager and Maggie McClelland posted five digs apiece. Lexie Millburg and Avery Pope added three digs, while Sidney Glick and Desi Pitchford had two and one dig respectively against the Lutheran hitters. The Lancers did have some success at the net in blocking the Crusaders, with Katelyn Payne putting down two and Krager, Glick and Pope each blocking one.
On the Lincolnwood attack, Krager led the way with three kills, followed by Glick and Pope with two and Payne and McClelland with one each. Pope also led the team in assists, posting seven on the night.
With the loss a now distant memory, the 1-1 Lancers will move to their next challenge, a match-up with South County at the Woodshed in Raymond on Thursday, March 25. After that, Lincolnwood hits the road for the first time as they travel to Edinburg for a varsity only contest.
