Darlene Y. Sherman, 92, of Nokomis, died on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023, at home surrounded by family.

There will be no public services. Mrs. Sherman will be laid to rest by her husband at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield. Arrangements have been entrusted with Quad County Cremation Service in Taylorville.

Mrs. Sherman was born Jan. 12, 1931, in Freeport, the daughter of Edwin and Helen (Larrow) Wales. She married Charles B. Sherman on May 11, 1952, in Freeport.

Mrs. Sherman was a 1952 graduate of Macon County Nurse’s Training in Decatur and worked there as a nurse until 1963.  It was then that the family moved to Freeport, where she worked as a nurse at Freeport Memorial Hospital from 1963 to 1972.  She also worked at Empire School with physically disabled children.  Mrs. Sherman and the family later relocated to Pana, where she began her career at Taylorville Memorial Hospital.  From there she would retire.

She is survived by her children, sons,  Charles B. Sherman, Jr. and Stanley A. (JoAnn) Sherman, both of Springfield, and daughter, Lynnetta Y. (Scott) McClain of Nokomis; four grandchildren, Joseph and Robert Sherman of Springfield, Jacob (Amanda Whitten) Pinkston of Fillmore and Angelique (Peyton) Robison of Jacksonville, NC; three great-grandchildren, Alexia, Braylon and Ainsley; and one brother, Homer Wales of Gautier, MS.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
