David M. Benning, 72, of Raymond, died Saturday, March 14, 2020, at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. 

Graveside services will be held Friday, March 20, at 11:30 a.m. in Asbury Cemetery. Hough Funeral Home in Raymond is in charge of arrangements. 

Those planning to attend are asked to follow the CDC guidelines. If anyone is symptomatic with flu-like illness or has a compromised immune system, please refrain from attending.

Mr. Benning was born July 3, 1947, in Hillsboro, the son of Louis Martin and Emma Iona (Hudson) Benning. He married Frances Dullenty on July 6, 1974, and she survives.

From 1968 to 1971, he served in the U.S. Army. He earned his bachelors of science degree from Southern Illinois University.

In business for over 43 years, he started out as Dave’s Lawn and Garden, which was a small storefront business located in Raymond. He later expanded the business to Dave’s True Value, as well as Benning Distributing, which was a Grasshopper mower distribution company. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Carrie (Jonathon) Wills of Champaign; sons, Matthew (Kathy) Benning of Raymond and Eric (Jennifer) Benning of Bunker Hill; grandchildren, Gavin, Grant, Laney and Isley; two brothers, Harold (Ruth) Benning of Raymond and Ivan (Karen) Benning of Harvel; and sisters, Dorothy (George) Sloss of Raymond and Virginia (Sam) Rinella of Carbondale.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Russell, Paul, Ralph; and sister, Joyce Weihe.

Memorials may be made to the Panhandle Food Pantry, American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
