Donald E. Stewart, 65, of Gillespie, died Friday, May 22, 2020, at 7:35 p.m. at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.
Family services will be held. Kravanya Funeral Home in Gillespie is assisting the family.
Mr. Stewart was born Nov. 27, 1954, in Litchfield, the son of Samuel J., Sr. and Mildred (Morris) Stewart. He married Charlene Anderson on Nov. 28, 1975, at the United Methodist Church in Gillespie, and she survives.
A mine examiner for Monterey Coal Company, he was a member of the Miners Cemetery Committee of Mt. Olive. He was also a member of the Mining Board of Springfield, the president of United Mine Workers of America Local 1613, and the head of Mines and Minerals at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, being outdoors and being with family.
He is survived by his daughters, Kelly Lyons of Sawyerville and Jaclyn (husband Ted) Knetzer of Gillespie; three grandchildren, Aidan Samuel Lyons, Brody Edward Knetzer and Max Stewart Knetzer; father-in-law, Randy Anderson; brother-in-law, Randy (wife Denny) Anderson; and sister-in-law, Suzanne Stewart of Litchfield.
Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by a brother, Sam Stewart, Jr. and mother-in-law, Shirley Anderson.
