Doris E. Mathews, 96, of Greenwood, IN, died on Wednesday, March 27, 2019. 

A gathering of family and friends will take place on Sunday, April 7,  at 1 p.m. at Simplicity Funeral and Cremation Care in Indianapolis, IN.

Mrs. Mathews was born on Feb. 12, 1923, in Greenville to Pearle (Palmer) and Homer Watkins, who had owned Watkins Jewelry on the square in Greenville.  She earned her B.A. in English from Greenville College and her master's degree in English education from Indiana University. She taught English in Bloomington, IN, for many years and later taught at Taylor University in Upland, IN.  

She and her husband retired to Lakeland, FL, after traveling to many countries. They were long-time members of the Free Methodist Church in Bloomington, IN. Among her hobbies were sewing, genealogy, and music, specifically the piano. Above all, her faith in Jesus and her love for her family were most important to her.

She is survived by her children, Stephen (Shirley) Mathews, Diana Brown, Mark (Priscilla) Mathews of Hillsboro, Rod (Toni) Mathews, and Greg (Elizabeth) Mathews; grandchildren, Michele, Philip, Kim, Ryan, Becca, Rachel, Janel, Justin, Joel, Jason, and Janessa; as well as great-grandchildren, Brenna, Kayla, Austin, Ariel, Eva, Emma, Dawson, Maddie, Lucie,  Ashlynn, and Oaklee.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Mathews; two sisters, Grace Wise and Ruth Watkins; a son-in-law, Tom Brown;  and a daughter-in-law, Esther Mathews.

Memorials may be made to the music department at Greenville University.
