Dr. Michael J. Mugge, 77

Dr. Michael Joyner Mugge, 77, of Murphysboro, died on Friday, Dec. 6, 2019.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 12, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro. Funeral services will follow, beginning at 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dr. Mugge was born in 1942 in Harrisburg to George Hudson and Sorado Mugge. He marrried Diane, and she survives.

He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 to 1965, and was a member of the USAFA Band-Drum and Bugle Corp and served in the Office of Special Investigations stationed at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Dr. Mugge graduated from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 1970 and continued to earn advanced degrees through his early career. In 1983, he earned his doctor of philosophy in education at SIUC.

He began his career in education in Anna Jonesboro as an English teacher. He quickly advanced to a new role as assistant principal in Hillsboro, then promoted to superintendent for 12 years. In 1986, he was hired as superintendent in Murphysboro, where he spent 17 years until his retirement in 2003.

Upon retiring, Dr. Mugge volunteered his time and talent to the Murphysboro Elks Lodge, the  American Legion Honor Guard playing taps at veteran funerals in Southern Illinois, and enjoyed golfing with his great group of friends.

He devoted his life to the success of children. With this dedication, he was the visionary for the Southern Region Early Childhood Program and was very instrumental in the building of General John A. Logan Elementary School.

Dr. Mugge loved his wife, children and grandchildren very much and will be dearly missed by all.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Michael Hudson and Dana (Scott) Herndon; and grandchildren, Brock and Abbigail Herndon.

Dr. Mugge was preceded in death by his parents.
