Dr. Ott Now Certified In Wound Care

An award-winning podiatrist who practices in Hillsboro is now the only physician south of Chicago to earn  Certified Wound Specialist Physician certification.

Dr. Andrew Ott, who began practicing at Hillsboro Specialty Clinic at Hillsboro Area Hospital in October 2018, just earned the new certification at the end of September.

“I do a lot of things that typical podiatrists don’t do,” Dr. Ott said.  “Since about 30 percent of the practice has been in wound care, we decided to pursue the board certification.”

That was not a simple process.  Among the requirements were four-to-five years of wound care experience, letters of recommendation from three physicians who have seen and can attest to the quality of work, and a certification test, which Dr. Ott took and passed in September.

Atypically for podiatrists, reconstructive surgery is one of Dr. Ott’s primary practices.

“Any wounds  below the knee,” the Certified Wound Specialist Physician said providing a list of typical patients: “surgical, skin, wounds that are not healing, wound diseases.”

The majority of his patients, however, are diabetics who have suffered destruction of nerves in the legs and feet.

“It’s really key that the patients see a provider in wound care to try to help prevent amputation,” Dr. Ott said.

A 2005 graduate of Hillsboro High School, he was a three-sport stand-out in football, wrestling and baseball.  He graduated summa cum laude from Blackburn College in 2009, where he was an all-conference linebacker and a 2008 semifinalist for the National Football Foundation's William V. Campbell trophy.

He graduated with a doctorate in podiatric medicine and surgery in 2014 from Des Moines University, where he was class vice president, teaching assistant at the medical school and a member of the Council of Presidents and Curriculum Committee.

He completed his residency in New York City, based at New York Presbyterian Queens where he was awarded as a third-year resident for earning the highest score in the country on the American Board of Podiatric Medicine training exam.
