Nine members of the Hillsboro Junior High athletes are headed to the IESA Class AA State Finals following their performances at the Springfield Sectional at Southeast High School on May 11 and 13.
Seven of the nine state qualifiers are Lady Dragons, with Mitchel Lowe representing the seventh grade boys and Tanner Clayton representing the eighth grade boys. Both Lowe and Clayton are competing in the pole vault, with Lowe clearing 7'9" to finish second in his class and Clayton clearing 9'3" to finish third in his.
For the girls, the seventh grade 4x200 team of Sophie Blankenship, McKenna Carter, Jolie Churchwell and Samantha Page took first at the sectional to move on to state, running a time of 1:59.75. Carter also finished first in the 200 meters, running a 29.93 to qualify in that event as well.
On the eighth grade side, Isabella White and Sierra Compton were both sectional champions and moved on to state. White ran a 1:07.54 in the 400 to earn her spot, while Compton ran a 5:46.07 in the 1600 to punch her ticket to East Peoria. Alex Frailey also advanced to state in the discus, throwing 93'8" to finish second in the sectional.
Field events begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 17, with running events beginning at 1:15 p.m., with the low hurdles, 400 meters, 1600 meters and 100 meters on the agenda. The meet continues at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
