Eickhoff, White End It On The Medal Podium

Posted

Hillsboro seniors Alex Eickhoff and Alex White began their golf careers on the same courses, so it was only fitting that they ended their prep careers the same way.

From the Hillsboro Country Club to the Drysdale youth golf tournaments to the IESA State Tournament, the Alexes have been there together, often at the top of the standings.

After four years of success at the high school level, that chapter came to a close on Saturday, Oct. 19, with both players finishing in the top ten of the IHSA Class 1A State Tournament, just one stroke apart with Eickhoff tied for fifth and White tied for seventh.

The pair would start the tournament on Friday, in the last and second to last groups of the day on the front nine at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington, a course they had been at several times before, including at the state tournament each of the last three years.

Eickhoff would start the day off with the best front nine of the day, shooting a 1-under-par 35, while White shot an even-par 36 to stay in the hunt for one of the top spots as well.

On the back nine, White would shoot a 41 to finish with a 77 for the day, good for 16th overall. Eickhoff would be tied for sixth at the end of the day, shooting a 2-over-par 38 on the back nine to finish with a 73, three strokes behind Marcus Smith of Winnebago and Matthew Barker of Downs Tri-Valley for the lead.

In striking distance of a state medal, Eickhoff would improve on his position, shooting a 37 on the front nine, then a 38 on the front to finish with a 75 for the day and a 148 for the weekend.

White would make a big jump, thanks in part to a 35 on the front nine, equalling the best score of the day on that part of the course. He would finish with an even-par 72 for the day, good for a 149 for the tournament.

Eickhoff would have seven birdies and 19 pars, while White had five birdies and 22 pars. The pair would have just one double bogey apiece in 36 holes of golf.

Eickhoff and White’s accomplishments have put them in the rarified air of other Hiltoppers who have medalled at the IHSA Boys Golf State Tournament. White, who was tenth in 2017, joins Nic Baker (7th in 1996 and 8th in 1997) and John Major (10th in 2001 and 9th in 2002) as Hillsboro’s only two-time medalists on the boys side.

Like his classmate, Eickhoff will go down as one of the best to play the game for the orange and black, adding to a trophy case that already included a sixth place medal from 2018, a seventh place medal from 2016 and an eighth place medal in 2017. The University of Minnesota-bound senior is the only boys golfer to take medals in four state tournaments, joining Brooke Beeler as the only Hillsboro golfer period to accomplish the feat.

While they will most likely always be somewhat linked due to their first names, Eickhoff and White have each forged their own path with spectacular results. And while their high school careers are over, the best very well could be yet to come.
