Local athletes will have the opportunity to test themselves, benefit a good cause and hear from one of the top Ironman competitors in the world this month at this year's Litchfield Spring Duathlon.
The event, which consists of a two mile run, a 12 mile bike ride and another two mile run, is a USAT Sanctioned duathlon and will be held Saturday, March 26, at Litchfield High School. The race will begin at 10 a.m., with the transition open from 8 to 9:45 a.m.
The cost to enter is $50 for individuals or $75 for a two-member team for those who preregister. Race day registration is $60 for individuals and $85 for teams. Online registration for the event closes on March 24 at midnight.
All proceeds from the event will go to fund the Litchfield High School cross country program. Race sponsors include Bank & Trust, Carlinville Family Practice Center and Mullins Race Engines.
There will be an early packet pick-up opportunity at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Litchfield from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 25. At 7 p.m., there will be a question and answer session with Pro Triathlete Lisa Roberts, a Gillespie High School grad and former Benld native.
Roberts, who now resides in Tucson, AZ, is currently ranked 20th in the women's KPR (Kona Point Rankings), which tracks professional athletes through a point system to determine qualifying for the 2016 Ironman World Championships in Kona, HI.
The fifth American to finish at the Ironman World Championships in Kona in 2014 and a member of Team Timex, Roberts recently finished second in the women's division at the Pan-American Ironman 70.3 Championships, held in Panama City, Panama on Jan. 29-31.
