Empty Trailers No Longer Allowed On Marina Lot

A new policy prohibits leaving boat trailers sitting on the marina parking lot all summer at Glenn Shoals Lake in Hillsboro, but does not leave boat owners without a place to store their trailers.

Many boaters who leave their boats on the water all summer–either in personal docks at lake residences or in a slip at the South Marina–routinely leave their empty boat trailers on the north and west edges of the marina parking lot for the duration of boating season.

As boating on the lake has become more and more popular, that has become a problem.

"Last year, we had 17 trailers on the South Marina parking lot all summer long," Hillsboro Park Superintendent Jim May said.  "That gets to be a problem, especially on holidays like the fourth of July when we run out of parking spaces."

From now on, trailers left unattended for more than 72 hours are subject to impoundment by the city, plus a $150 fine and a $150 impoundment fee for the owners.

To help boat owners who still would like a spot to store empty boat trailers over the summer, the city is developing a new parking lot specifically for boat trailers on the south side of the dam, accessible through the police shooting range.

Cost to use the new parking lot is $20 a month or $100 for the season; for those who lease boat slips at the marina, the charge drops to $15 a month or $75 for the season.

"The charge is just enough to cover the cost of putting in the new lot," May said.
