Ernest E. “Ernie/Butch” Flowers, 90, of Hillsboro, formerly of Vandalia, died on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, at Hillsboro Area Hospital.

Private family graveside services will be held at Glendale Cemetery in Fillmore. Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia is assisting the family.

Mr. Flowers was born June 30, 1930, in Fillmore, at the house he lived in for 44 years, to Curtis Everett and Lula Pearl (Wilburn) Flowers. He married Joyce LaDon Root on Jan. 27, 1952, in Fillmore, and she survives.

He began as a farmer and was called to preach in January 1956. He started at Van Burensburg in 1957, where he served for ten years, then moved on to Bethel Baptist Church from 1966 to 1986.  During that time, he earned his associate’s degree in pastoral ministeries in 1983. He then became director of missions for Rehoboth Association for 12 years, retiring in 1997.

Mr. Flowers was a former Boy Scout leader and served on the Nokomis School Board for nine-and-a-half years; Baptist State Board for 15 years; nominating committee for Southern Baptist National Convention; Baptist Foundation Board; and the Baptist Children’s Home board of directors for 26 years.

The Lord was his number one in life, then his family. Not only was his family special to him, but he loved his church families also. After retiring, he enjoyed playing golf and had a fine skill and craftsmanship for making oak furniture. He and his wife traveled the country to watch their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in sports and other events. He was very proud of his family.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Flowers is survived by his sons, Mike (Marcia) Flowers of Lucas, TX, Rick (Debbie) Flowers of Mayfield, KY, John (LuAnn) Flowers of Memphis, TN, and Bruce Flowers of Emory, TX; daughter, Tina (Curt) Hagemeier of Morrisonville; 11 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and five brothers.

Memorials may be directed to Bethel Baptist Church or Glendale Cemetery in Fillmore.
