The Staunton Bulldogs spoiled the Nokomis softball team’s season opener on Saturday, April 24, by beating the Redskins 11-0 in five innings.
While the final score ended up lopsided in the Bulldogs’ favor, the game was much closer until the fifth inning, when Staunton scored seven runs to put themselves in position to end the game early.
Nokomis starter Aubrey Jaros would duel with Tori Kierbach of Staunton, who comes to the Bulldogs via their co-op with Mt. Olive. Neither pitcher would give up a run in the first two innings, with Jaros working her way out of trouble after a single and a walk to start the inning.
Staunton would get on the board in the third inning with a rally that started with Evin Frank’s two-out triple. Two walks and a groundout would result in the Bulldogs going ahead 2-0 before Nokomis got out of the inning.
The Redskins would threaten in the bottom half of the inning, getting a double from Emma Hill and a single from Mia Fesser to start the inning, but struck out two and coaxed a ground out to hold on to their two run lead.
Another two-out rally would give Staunton two more runs in the top of the fourth, with a Whitney Weller triple and back-to-back doubles by Frank and Kylie Lucykow making it a 4-0 ball game.
As they did in the previous inning, Nokomis put the first two runners on base when Kristen Stauder started off the fourth by reaching on an error, followed by a single from Karly Wanger. Stauder would be erased on a fielder’s choice of Jaros’ bat and Kierbach would strike out the next two batters to get out of the jam.
Six hits, two walks and a hit batter would put Staunton in position to end the game early as they scored seven times in the top of the fifth off Jaros and reliever Reaghan Jonas.
Nokomis would try to extend the game in the bottom of the fifth, but Kierbach shut down those hopes as the Williams Baptist University recruit struck out two of the three batters she faced to up her K total to 10 on the day.
Nokomis would scatter four hits on the day against Kierbach, with Fesser, Wanger and Jaros adding singles to Hill’s third inning double.
Jaros would give up eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and six walks while striking out five. Jonas allowed three runs on four hits after coming on to complete the fifth inning for Jaros.
Nokomis will start next week at home against Edinburg on April 26, followed by road trips to Metro-East Lutheran in Edwardsville on April 27 and Edinburg on April 28.
