As of Thursday last week, three forged checks have come through local banks, drawn on accounts of victims of the rash of vehicle break-ins Jan. 20 at Fusion Fitness and DaVita Dialysis, according to Hillsboro Police Chief Randy Leetham.
Police are still looking for the suspects–black males in a white Mercedes SUV with Missouri license plates–who stole purses from vehicles parked not only at the two Hillsboro locations, but also at Snap Fitness in Litchfield and the YMCA in Vandalia. The vehicle was last scene headed north from Litchfield on Interstate 55.
Illinois State Police have recovered six purses taken in the break-ins discarded along the Interstate. Those have been returned to the owners, but missing checkbooks and personal identification.
Leetham said that the criminals apparently used the victims' IDs to forge fake ones for themselves, then used those fake IDs to cash checks from the victims' accounts.
