Frederick “Fred” Paul Roth, 86, of Carlinville, died on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020, peacefully at home surrounded by his family.
Funeral Mass was held Saturday, Nov. 7, at SS Mary and Joseph Catholic Church in Carlinville. Burial followed in Hagaman Cemetery.
Mr. Roth was born March 6, 1934, in Carrollton, to Mathias and Margaret (Becker) Roth. He married Betty Ann Armstrong on April 23, 1960, in the Greenfield Catholic Church, and she survives.
He graduated from Greenfield High School with the class of 1951. Because of his intellect, he was allowed to skip the third grade.
Mr. Roth served his country in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1956. He served 18 months in Korea, where he led an Army amphibious “Duck Platoon.”
He was a retired farmer in Macoupin and Greene counties. He was an experienced bulldozer operator, working in a rock quarry in Kane and cleaning farm ground in Rolling Fork, MS.
Mr. Roth enjoyed helping two of his sons in their autobody and mechanic shops. He also enjoyed gardening, boating, mushroom hunting, Jeep rides and listening to Johnny Cash and country music. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of 61 years, he is survived by his sons, Rick Roth of Fillmore, Tom (Sharon) Roth, Jim (Janet) Roth and Lyndell Roth, all of Carlinville; grandchildren, Casey (Kevin) Spitz of Arlington Heights, Derek Roth of Hoboken, JN, Emily Roth of Urbana, Megan (Ryan) Loyet of Carlinville, Jessica (Kory Schneider) Roth of Shiloh and Brandon Roth of Carlinville; great-grandchildren, Jason, Andrew and Morgan Spitz of Arlington Heights; sisters, Betty (George) Witt of Greenfield, Alberta Lizenby of Hettick and Margaret Wester of Jerseyville; brothers, Albert Roth of Carrollton and Cletus (Joan) Roth of Greenfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Roth was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gerald, Vincent, Jerome and Rolland; and sister, Bernadine Brecht.
